DESCRIPTION
PER PALE
Shield or figure divided into two equal parts by a longitudinal line.
These divided shields are of two kinds, that is to say those which form a single primitive weapon, and those composed of two weapons joined by this partition.
A particular symbolism is attributed to shields colored with various enamels: the gold and gules color indicates jurisdiction, justice and magnanimous nobility; gold and azure, perfect nobility, honor of virtue and splendor of merit in the midst of the most sublime grandeur; gold and green, supreme hope; of gold and black, glorious thoughts in a firm will; gold and purple, wealth, domination supported by religion and prudence, etc. The Party is very common in Italy, where it was distinctive from the Ghibellines.
In Spain, the division of the shield is the sign of two greats in the same family.
Little-used synonyms for Part are bipartite, perpendicular bipartite, divided, pole-divided, along-divided, etc.
